Color Me Mine will host The Ghent Dog Park’s first official fundraising event on Sunday evening, October 7th from 6:00 until 9:00 PM. Have fun painting a dog pumpkin that says “WOOF,” as you enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Paint your pumpkin anyway you wish, any breed breed or color that suits you. The pumpkins will be fired and ready for pick-up by October 19th to enjoy for Halloween!
Cost of the event is $50 per person or $75 per couple (one pumpkin). The program fee supports the Ghent Dog Park Association for the renovation of the park at the 1300 block of Stockley Gardens.
The dog park was established in the Gardens by the city of Norfolk several years ago. It has become a lively community center with dogs and their owners enjoying the park everyday from sun-up to sundown.
The most pressing improvement issue is that the park has no fence in a heavily trafficked area – a situation that endangers the dogs and is an inconvenience for surrounding homeowners. With overwhelming support (80%) of the surrounding neighborhood and the Ghent Neighborhood League, the Association is seeking to build a graceful, historically accurate double gated powder coated aluminum fence with brick columns around the 1 ½ acre park parcel. Because of the beauty of its design, the fence is costly. The Association will raise the funds needed for purchasing the capital equipment for the fence, and the city will install it. The cost of the fence is $50,000.
The Ghent Dog Park Association is well on its way to raising the $50,000. $17,000 has been committed to date, and we anticipate fulfilling our initial goal by the spring of 2009 when the fence will be built.
After the fence is built, the Association will continue to improve the park with lighting, water fountains and landscaping. Although the city will maintain and manage the park, the Ghent Dog Park Association will keep it looking beautiful and provide improvements as needed. The Association will continue to:
- Support off-leash privileges at the dog park
- Raise funds for the beautification and maintenance of the park
- Receive, invest and use funds derived from fundraising activities to facilitate the health, safety, maintenance and improvement of the park
- Provide volunteer support to improve and better maintain the park
- Advocate responsible dog ownership
- Serve as a local educational resource for dog ownership
- Cultivate community spirit and neighborhood relationships through outreach
- Provide a safe, clean and accessible environment for people and dogs to exercise and socialize together
