Story: WE DID IT!!!!!
The fence has been built!! After a 5+ year community effort, the Ghent Dog Park is now encircled with a stately, black steel fence with brick columns and a pair of double entry/exit gates for the safety of both dogs and humans, as well as an attractive neighborhood addition for all to enjoy. Many thanks to our dogpark members and supporters (including the Ghent Neighborhood League) whose efforts and contributions over the years have built this park "Brick by brick" and "Picket by Picket". Thanks also to the City of Norfolk for their approval and guidance throughout the project. This accomplishment marks completion of Phase I, with additional improvement phases to include improved lighting, landscaping, walkways, water and a bulletin board. Please join the fun and become a GDPA member!

Story: IT'S FINALLY HAPPENING!!!!
The fence is scheduled to be built!! The column contractor should start the columns by the end of June and finish in one week. The fence will then follow and that should take approximately 3 weeks to complete. Both columns and fence are anticipated to be completed by early August. (Subsequent phases of park improvements include landscaping, sidewalks, lighting and park elements.)

Today, we received the final "Right of Entry" paperwork from the City Attorney and City Manager's office , which allows contractor access to the site and enables the actual building to commence. (As you know, once the columns and fence are completed, the city will maintain the structures as well as tend the green space, as they are doing now).

Story: Revised Estimate Puts Us Closer
We are much closer to our goal. After revised estimates from our bidders and with the city's input, we now know that we need slightly less that $30,000 for our fence and the brick columns. We anticipate reaching our goal in the next couple months and for construction to begin before the end of the summer.

Story: The GDPA kicked off the new year yesterday with a meeting with Mr. Crittendon, the new director of the City's Open Spaces and Recreation and his staff. We introduced Mr. Crittendon to our project and renewed interest with his staff. Our project was extremely well-received as a "winning" public-private partnership. Mr. Crittendon expressed favorable remarks and was impressed with our focus and committment, as he confirmed his department's support. One of his newly hired staffperson's closing remark was, ".....this concept of neighborhood project partnership was one of the reasons I moved to Norfolk"! A very successful meeting!

Story: In July, our Dog Park Family made our first adoption match. After hearing about it thru our network, Melody Palmer found a home for "Jazzy" a local lab mix (which was on her way to a rescue or shelter). Melody's in-laws sadly lost their Lab awhile ago and were considering another dog. Melody "pitched" the attributes of "Jazzy" and they said YES! Thank you Melody and family for helping this dog find its way to her forever home.

We took a big step towards that today. After a lot of hard work, all our 501(c)3 documents have been filed.

Story: This has arguably been our most significant week ever! On Monday, Norfolk's Design Review Board officially approved our plans for the Stockley Gardens Dog Park Renovation. That approval spring-boarded us into a meeting with Norfolk's Planning Commission today, and the Commission also approved our plans. The only step left is to get the Norfolk City Council to sign off on our project. The date for the City Council meeting will be posted here when we are informed of it.

Story: The city is researching availability/cost of 42" fencing as well as finalizing their design drawing, based on our original design. Their proposal should be ready by end of week. Once that is finalized, they will send to the Mayor's office. Once that is acknowledged from the Mayoral level, we will be approved to schedule committee meetings within other depts with the City of Norfolk.
Posted: 11/7/2005

Story: The Dogpark Committee held a meeting at Anna Goldenberg's. We discussed and agreed with the city's recommendation with some of the column substituion. Also, we agreed on a 42" fence height. (To put this in perspective, the orange fencing for flag day was 48"...which was too much a barrier both physically and visually). Formation of a possible 501c3 was also discussed. Anna has talked with Jim Theurer (attorney) and is researching for more information.
Posted: 10/20/2005

Story: Anna and Paige met with the city. The city recommended to delete a few of the brick columns in the original plan due to feasibility issues (maitenance and cost). This will not compromise aesthetics and we will retain the 4 brick columns at the 4 corners of the design. (We will clarify how we want to handle the brick columns at the entrances). In the areas that brick columns would be "replaced", the city recommended we replace them with aluminum columns matching the historical fence design.
